SNOW fell this morning on the hills of North Yorkshire, making driving conditions hazardous.
Webcams operated by North Yorkshire County Council showed snow landing on both the A170 at Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, and on the B1257 at Chopgate, north of Helmsley.
Sleety snow even fell briefly in York at just before 9am.
The wintry conditions come only days after balmy autumn sunshine and have been caused by an anticyclone settling to the west of the UK and low pressure to the east, which have led to an Arctic blast of northerly winds sweeping across the country.
Forecasters say temperatures are set to rise no higher than 6C today in York, with the brisk winds making it feel even colder.
However the wintry showers should ease off later today, although there could be further isolated showers of sleet or snow at times this afternoon and evening on higher ground.
