AN event is being held on Thursday, September 20, to provide a detailed update on plans for the transformation of Malton Methodist Chuch.

Plans are underway to transform the building - which has been renamed The Wesley Centre - into a community hub.

Paul Emberley, development lead for the major scheme said: “We first developed our vision for the building following consultation with the community in June 2016.

"Since then, the plans for the sensitive alterations to the 1811 Grade II listed building, have been further developed including with Historic England and other statutory consultees, and the core project has now been approved – which is a major milestone.

“We’d now like to share more details of the scheme as it now unfolds, to describe the facilities that will be available within the regenerated Wesley Centre, to listen to feedback, and to outline the programme for the redevelopment work from here on.

"The programme for the evening will include a short tour of the historic building.”

Phase 1 of the £2.4 million project, the major repair of the large roof, has already been completed, and the building was re-opened to visitors daily and for special events at the beginning of June this year.

Phase 2 of the scheme is about to start, with the complete refurbishment of the adjoining building at the North Wing (12 Saville Street).

Phase 3 is the proposed reinstatement of the large three-storey ‘East Wing’, adjoining the rear of the church building. This is planned to house many of the community facilities for the Hub, for which there is a dearth of such available space in a rapidly growing Malton.

For the remainder of 2018 and until the autumn of 2019, community groups from the Malton and Norton area will be able to use the existing facilities in the Wesley Centre, subject to availability, without charge.

The evening will commence with complimentary refreshments from 17.45, and the meeting itself will start at 18.30.

Interested individuals, and representatives from community groups and charities are welcome to attend.

People wishing to attend the special evening are asked to call 01653 698626 to register their interest.
