History walk - As part of the North York Moors National Park’s Breath of Fresh Air Walk scheme, a walk called Explore A 12th Century Village will start from the village hall on Sunday, August 5 at 10.45am and finish at noon. Booking is essential and can be done by phoning 01439 772737.

BRANSDALE

Church teas - St Nicholas Church’s next teas afternoon is on Saturday, August 4 from 11.30am until 4pm. All proceeds are for St Nicholas’ Church funds. There is a toilet facility on site and the church is signed and found at Cockayne at the head of the dale.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - As this Sunday is a fifth Sunday in the month, there will be a joint service for the churches in the Upper Derwent Benefice. This time it is the turn of St Peter’s Church, Langdale End, where the service will start at 10.30am. There will be coffee afterwards in the village hall. There will not be a service in Brompton that day, but All Saints will as usual be open for visitors during the day. This Friday afternoon there is a music video being made there so anyone visiting is asked to go in quietly.

School - Brompton and Sawdon’s top class has had a term of football-themed lessons devised by their teacher Oliver Cooper, so Mrs Stroud, the school catering officer, created a football shirt cake signed with all the leavers’ names. The final assembly on Friday afternoon finished with the leavers going through the traditional arch of teachers and parents with a barbecue that evening.

Duck race - Race numbers are on sale for the annual duck race to be held during the church fete at the Manor House on Sunday, August 5. Each number costs a £1, just sign your name on one of the boards currently displayed in Glaves’ Butchers shop and at the Old Post Office Tavern. The first prize is £25, second will be a bottle of bubbly and third place will receive a box of chocolates. There is also something for the last duck home.

BULMER

Bridge club - Winners of the meeting on Thursday, July 19 were Jane Bartlett and Sheila Briske with 64.2 per cent. Second were Sheila Johnson and Gill Oxenedale with 62.9 per cent.

CROPTON

Summer fair - The village church’s summer fair on Saturday was blessed with glorious sunshine and raised £580. The event was well attended and visitors enjoyed teas of homemade cakes. A tombola, raffle, plants and bric-a-brac stalls were in great demand.

HELMSLEY

Help needed - Readers are sought for the This Way Delight poetry festival which is being held in late September. Plans are in hand for individuals or groups to join a celebration of poetry through ages, reading or singing lyrics on love and landscape, peace and war. Venues, chosen for their significance and accessibility, will be announced as soon as the organisers have a nucleus of helpers. Coffee morning - The Helmsley fundraising branch of the RNLI are holding a coffee morning at the Arts Centre on Friday, August 3 between 10am and noon.

HOVINGHAM

Memorial bench - Methodist Chapel members and friends invited the late Joan Gaunt’s eldest son, Mike, and his wife, Jean, to join them for afternoon tea at Lastingham Grange on Sunday. It was then a surprise when they were shown a bench dedicated with an inscription ‘Joan Gaunt 1928-2017, Presented by her Friends from Hovingham Methodist Chapel, With affectionate Memories.’ For many years Douglas and Joan Gaunt had holidays at Lastingham Grange. The bench was blessed with a short service by Rev Tanya Short with readings from Psalm 95 and Genesis 18 1-8, by Ian Battersby and Sue Goodwill.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Heritage day - The town’s Heritage Day, sponsored by Kirkbymoorside Town Council, will be held on Saturday from 9.30am until 4.30pm in the Methodist Chapel Rooms, Piercy End. The theme will be Lest We Forget, commemorating the end of the First World War and the impact it had on the town. There will be displays and exhibits as well as cakes and coffees, along with books and information. Entrance will be £2 and there is going to be a tour of All Saints churchyard at 1pm, with the opportunity to learn more about the residents who weren’t to return home from the Front. Local actor Dominic Goodwin will present a selection from his upcoming revue in the Memorial Hall from 7pm to 9pm. There will also be a chance to learn about the Memorial Hall and the gift from Captain Frank, who served in the Tanks Corps, to the town. Poetry festival - Kirkdale Heritage and Herbert Read Forum are developing plans for an autumn poetry festival. Menzown - Club member John Paul will lead a visit to the Ryedale Folk Museum on Tuesday, August 14. Members should meet in the King’s Head car park at 2pm to offer and sort out lifts. Requests for museum buggies or for door to door transport should be made by phoning 01439 770031 as soon as possible. The trip to the Beck Isle Museum will not now take place.

Messy Church - The theme of the July session was telling others about Jesus by lifestyle and people’s relationships with others. The informal worship included the Holy Communion and £50 was sent to the Ryedale Foodbank. The next Messy Church will be on Monday, September 17.

Camera Club - A creative competition will be held in the Moorside Bar & Club on Thursday, August 2.

Benefice Pilgrimage - All Saints Church will be hosting the Benefice Pilgrimage lunch on Saturday, August 12. Anyone who can bake a cake or make sandwiches for the lunch should get in touch Anne Warriner. The pilgrimage continues the following day, Sunday.

Open gardens - Sleightholmedale gardens will be open on Sunday, August 12 at 2pm. The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie will be serving teas up to 5pm. The support group will host a tombola stall at the Ryedale Show on Tuesday, July 31. Anyone wishing to donate a prize should phone June Cook on 01751 431160.

Summer fair - All Saints Church is having a summer fair in the Memorial Hall on Saturday from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Stalls include a bottle stall, jams and pickles, plants, books, jigsaws, home-baked cakes, raffle and tombola.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive at Sturdy Court on Monday, July 30 at 7.30pm.

LOCKTON

Country show - The annual Saltersgate Farmers Hunt Country Show will be held at Saltersgate Bank Top, on Saturday starting at 9.30am.

MALTON

Flower club - The July meeting of Malton and District Flower Club featured a demonstration by Elaine Bedford called Patterns of Africa. The designs portrayed her many visits to Africa and used both exotic and more common plant material. Techniques for using bio-degradable materials, in the mechanics, were much appreciated. The next meeting, on Tuesday, September 18 will be the annual general meeting which starts at 1pm. It will be followed by a willow weaving workshop. Bridge club - After a one-week break, Malton Bridge Club resumed its summer programme last Wednesday with a win for Annette Jackson and Madeleine Webber. Tim Johnson and Audrey Shaw took second place with Michael Wright and Alan Butterworth third.

NAWTON

Bingo - A prize bingo will be held in the village hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, August 4 to raise funds for the hall. It will be the last monthly bingo, but it is hoped to host a bingo session at Christmas.

Club draw - The June winners of the Beckett Recreation Ground 100 Club draw were Stamp family (No 30) £50, D Grayson (No 52) £30, Bentley family (No 112) £10 and D and S Wood (No 19) £10.

Parkinson’s Support - The July meeting of Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group was held in Trinity Methodist Church. It was the annual visit of Professor Stephen Smith, of the University of York, who updated the group on the work of his department into Parkinson’s. The next meeting will be extra to the printed programme when members are invited to Park Farm, Rillington, for afternoon tea at 2pm on Thursday, August 9. Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge, the winners were Madge Allison and Stan Bough with 68.75 per cent. In second place were Graeme Matthew and Anne Avery with 61.81 per cent and in third place, with 54.86 per cent, John Bramall and Philip Mason.

Five Divide - The 1960s tribute band Five Divide will be appearing at the Working Men’s Club, Southgate, on Saturday at 9pm.

Sponsored bike ride - A sponsored 48-hour bike ride in aid of Cancer Research UK and the Special Care Baby Unit at Scarborough Hospital will take place starting at 7pm on Saturday, September 1 from 19 Hungate where it will finish on Sunday, September 3. People are welcome to join in and do a lap or two or more. Volunteers and sponsorship are also needed. Bus service - The new town bus service which runs Monday to Friday, but not on Bank Holidays, has two routes, the 170 service leaves the Ropery at 9.55am, 10.55am and 11.55am and 12.55pm and 13.55pm going to Pike Road, Manor Drive, Littledale, Middleton Road. The second route is the 171 leaving the Ropery at 9.30am, 10.20am, and 11.20am, 12.30pm and 13.20pm going to Westlands, Ruffa Lane, Whitfield Avenue, Forest Road, Birch View, Eastgate, Mickle Hill, and Pool Court.

Coffee morning - The Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British legion hold coffee mornings every Monday and Saturday at its Champley’s Yard headquarters from 10am to 12.30pm.

RILLINGTON

Tea party - An ‘Elegant Tea Party’ held at Greenbanks, Westgate raised £604 for the Shoe Box Appeal. Shoe boxes are filled annually for children in Eastern Europe with goodies for Christmas. The proceeds of the afternoon tea will go towards the £5 its costs to transport each shoebox.

Charity bingo - A prize bingo will be held tonight in Woodlands Community Centre for Macmillan Cancer Support at St Catherine’s Hospice. Doors open 6.45pm with eyes down at 7.15pm.

RYEDALE

Flower show - The Yorkshire Pelargonium & Geranium Society recently held its annual show at Hunmanby Community Centre. Joan Ward from Scarborough triumphed in the beginners’ classes and also took home the YPGS Trophy for most points gained in the novice class. Peter Gardner was awarded The Parker Trophy and Dave Edmond won the Joyce Strickland Memorial Trophy for his special bronze leaf pelargoniums. Dave also came out on top of the competition for most points won by a local resident. Scarborough man Peter Bendall, was presented with the Norman Wood Memorial Trophy in the class for plant pyramids and Brian Boyes from Seamer won the Firtrees Nursery Trophy for best hanging pots in show. Past national champion Ken Abel held two workshops on growing and showing which were well attended. He also won several awards for his plants. SEAMER

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Richard Sheard. The vestry steward was Bert Blower, the organist was Gay Marr, the welcomer was Margaret Harris and the offering was taken by Margaret Neave. The bible readings were given by Mr Sheard. In his sermon Mr Sheard talked about the authority in Jesus’s voice when he preached to the five thousand. The preacher next week at 10.30am is the Rev Nigel Spencer.

St Martin’s Church - The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, presided and preached at both morning services of Holy Communion. He spoke from Ephesians 2 about the two pictures Paul uses of the church: as a family and as a building with Jesus as the cornerstone. At the 9.30am service Edna Burton accompanied the hymns and Jean Donovan assisted with the chalice. Dot Francis and Gisa Moore were the sidespeople and Tricia Winlayson and Elizabeth Chapman served refreshments. At the 11am service Tim Cremer led the intercessions and Liz Cremer read. Mary Otway assisted with the chalice. The sung worship was led by Steve Raettig with John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jo Taylor was the sidesperson and the vicar served refreshments after the service. During August the church will be open every Friday from 10am to 4pm, as well as the usual times of 1pm to 3pm on Wednesdays and 10am to noon on Saturdays.

Art exhibition - St Martin’s annual art exhibition takes place from Friday, August 3 to Thursday, August 9 inclusive. The church is open with refreshments available from 10am to 4pm each day apart from Sunday, August 5 when it will be open from 1.30pm to 4pm. Most of the pictures and other items can be purchased.

SHERBURN

Duck race - A duck race to raise money for memorial flower tubs in the village in memory of Denis Brown and Ryan Walker will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27. The ducks will be released in East Beck at 3pm. Ducks cost £1 each to sponsor. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third and a prize for last duck home. Entry forms are at the East Riding pub or see Tracy Vitty or Kay Miles. A car boot sale will be held on the same day at the village sportsfield from 8am to 1pm to raise money for the memorial flower tubs. It costs £5 to enter a car.

Letters draw - Sherburn Football Club’s letters draw on Saturday produced two winners, A Southwick and D Ledner, who shared £135. The letters drawn were A, D and N.

Methodist news - The coffee morning hostess on Tuesday was Liz Aconley and donations for coffee from August will be given to the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Liz, assisted by John and Graham, set up the tables for the Luncheon Club each month. The craft club continues to meet on Thursdays at 1.30pm. Sunday worship was led by Christine Fenwick assisted by the worship team. Music on the organ was assisted by Robin on guitar. Readings were by Sandra and Chris Cade. Prayers were led by Jean Brown. The offertory stewards were India and Kiara Heron. Refreshments were enjoyed in the hall after worship. The service of Holy Communion this Sunday will be led by the Rev Pam Ward.

Luncheon Club - Birthday greetings were sung to Betty Flinton and Bill Hyndford at the recent Senior Citizens Luncheon Club meeting. Bill played his keyboard for the club members after the meal. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, August 15, meeting from 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. Transport within the village can be arranged by phoning Christine on 01944 711294.

Shoebox appeal - Villagers are asked to find gifts to put in shoeboxes to be sent to held children in Eastern Europe at Christmas. A toy, stationery items, hygiene items (but no liquids), a knitted hat scarf and glove set all are all welcome. Lists of suitable items can be picked up at the Tuesday coffee morning in the chapel, where knitting patterns are also available. The organisers can use any spare knitting wool. Bridge Club - The meeting on Monday, July 16 was won by Pat and George Donnor with 67.3 per cent. In second place were Margaret Lowe and Isa Eggleston with 60.1 per cent.

Open-air service - Churches Together are having an open-air service on the Green at 3pm on Sunday.

WESTOW

Craft evening - Anyone who sews, knits, crochets, draws, paints or do any crafts can attend a knit and natter craft evening in the cricket club pavilion on Wednesday, August 1. The evening is open to everyone, no matter the level of skill, experience in your respective hobby. It is also an opportunity to learn a new skill. Drinks will be available. Entry is £2. Monthly drop-in - The next monthly drop-in session at the cricket club pavilion will be on Thursday, August 2 between 2pm and 4pm. There will be tea, coffee, and home baking available by donation. There is the chance to play pool, cards and dominoes. There will also be a small selection of second hand books and magazines to browse through and take home by donation. The donations for drinks, books will be used to pay for the hire of the pavilion.

Open house - Volunteers will be serving tea, coffee, cold drinks, home baking and bacon sandwiches on Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 1pm in the cricket club pavilion to raise money for the cricket club and pavilion.

WOMBLETON

Domino drives - There will be domino drive to raise funds for the village hall in the hall on Saturday at 7.30pm and Wednesday, August 1. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

YCA REPORT

Wombleton - June welcomed 25 members and thanked everyone, on behalf of Julie Ryan, for raising £110 at the previous meeting for the International Rescue Corps. The July visit to Nunnington Hall gardens, arranged by Norma, was enjoyed. Members were given details of a social walk organised by Ayton YCA to be held on Monday, August 13 to begin at the village hall at 2pm. Carol reminded members about the closing date for entries to the Ryedale Show. Lists were circulated for members to sign if they were interested in attending afternoon tea at Ampleforth on Tuesday, August 21 and for posh afternoon tea at Kirby Misperton Village Hall on Wednesday, September 5 when Alum Pie will provide musical entertainment. The September meeting will be a charity musical evening led by David Swann. Tickets are £3 and each member is asked to bring along at least one other person. The raffle was drawn. Pam introduced Pilla Pickles to give a talk on communication and deafness. Members were given information leaflets to show how to communicate with people experiencing hearing loss in a more positive way. The talk was followed by a time for questions and Pam thanked Pilla for her presentation. Refreshments were served and the meeting closed at 9pm.
