RYEDALE Festival 2018, which starts this weekend, is set to bring classical music to historic venues across the district.

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Royal Northern Sinfonia will give major concerts at Hovingham Hall; the Choir of King’s College Cambridge are at Ampleforth Abbey; and the Orchestra of Opera North bring a symphonic programme to Scarborough Spa.

The festival celebrates the 90th birthday of its President John Warrack but it also creates opportunities for a new generation of musicians and music lovers, with the Ryedale500ticket offer, concerts by up-and-coming musicians and a series of masterclasses in which local young musicians can work with visiting artists.

Ryedale Festival kicks off on Friday from 10am with folk-flecked chamber music by Anton Dvorák, performed by the Albion quartet at St Mary’s Church in Birdsall.
