MALTON firemen were among the crews sent to Askham yesterday to free a trapped pony from a bog.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue were called to Askham Bogs near York just before 2pm on Monday, following reports the pony had become "stuck in four foot of muddy water".

As well as the Malton fire engine, crews from Acomb and Tadcaster also went to help at the scene.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said the Exmoor pony was brought out safely by crews using specialist animal rescue equipment, and was not harmed.
