A POLICE stand-off on a street in the Leeman Road area of York has been brought to a safe conclusion.

Officers set up a 100 metre cordon around a street amid fears for the safety of a resident.

Emergency services were called to a house in Carnot Street, and a number of neighbouring properties were evacuated.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said a woman has now been taken into the care of ambulance and mental health professionals.

One resident who lives on the street and asked not to be named said police had arrived on the scene at about 10am.

He added: “I heard shouting this morning. I was told to stay in my house and keep the doors shut. I haven’t been out all day.

“Nothing like this has happened before.

“Quite a lot of people were evacuated on that side of the street and one person left with their cats.”

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police reassured people that there was no threat to the wider public and thanked residents for their patience.

Seven police vans and one fire engine were at the scene.

The cordon was extended to Lincoln Street.

One Carnot Street resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I just came back from work about an hour ago and I can't get in my house. My understanding is that a woman has barricaded herself in her house."

Another resident said they came out of the house and saw lots of police and armed police as well as police with dogs.

A further Carnot Street resident said: “Police said there has been an incident. At the time they said it would only be an hour or two.

“I asked the police ‘should I bring my animals?’ They said ‘if you want to.’ I thought that was unusual.”

The incident was within 50 metres of St Barnabas CE Primary School and has 150 pupils.

A spokeswoman for City of York Council said the school will not be evacuated.

St Barnabas CE School head teacher, Karen Boardman (pictured above), said: "We're working with the police to ensure the safety of everybody. We're currently following their guidance and not evacuating, but advising parents that they'll need to take a different way home."
