A RYEDALE man is warning people to be wary before buying solar energy kits from door-to-door salesmen.

Philip Carpenter, of Helperthorpe, said that two elderly relatives of his from Huttons Ambo recently signed a contract to purchase one of the systems from a door-to-door salesman.

But Mr Carpenter said the cost was "astronomical", and the couple were even asked to sign away the "cooling off" period during which time they could cancel the contract.

He said: "My concern is that there are a number of traders targeting Ryedale at the moment who are charging up to three times the market rate of what they are providing, and frequently targeting elderly people."

Mr Carpenter said: "They were convinced that this salesman was an honest, sincere chap.

"They stay just within the law, but they manage to get people to sign away their cooling off period rights.

"I made the company withdraw (the contract) as I threatened them with everything."

A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council's trading standards department said they were "gravely concerned" about the complaint, and were eager to speak to anyone who might be able to help them with their inquiries.

He said: "The best advice is not to deal with cold callers at all. If you believe you need work doing to your property - or wish to buy a new service such as solar panels - ensure you take time to think carefully about it.

"Always consult a number of businesses, compare prices and check claims made about potential savings. These may prove to be incorrect.

"If you do receive such a cold call, report it immediately to trading standards on 08454 040506."
