MOTORISTS in rural areas have been urged to remain vigilant following thefts of car parts in the region.

A Toyota Highlander and a Ford Ranger both had their catalytic converters stolen in raids in rural areas around Danby, in the North York Moors, overnight on Tuesday.

Sergeant Zac Ahmed, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “Catalytic converter thieves cut the device from the exhaust pipe of a parked vehicle and sell it on.

“Taller vehicles such as 4x4s are particularly vulnerable as the converters are more accessible – and because they tend to have larger engines, they contain more of the precious metals. I am urging residents to take extra precautions to ensure their vehicles are secure.”

To reduce the risk of being targeted, residents should keep vehicles in a garage or well-lit, busy area, and be aware of people looking under them.
