A MAN who threw tiles off a roof during a six-hour siege has been jailed for two years.

Thomas Cassidy was sentenced to a total of 24 months in prison at York Crown Court after previously admitting a series of offences.

Cassidy, 25, of Tollergate, Scarborough, pleaded guilty to affray, three counts of criminal damage, possessing a Class A drug, using threatening words and behaviour and resisting a police constable, at a hearing on February 11.

Sobia Ahmed, prosecuting, said Cassidy forced his way into the home of his ex-partner in Hoxton Road, Scarborough, on February 9 this year and then climbed on to the roof.

He was already on bail after being arrested following a row at a Subway eatery in the town on February 5, with one of the conditions that he should not visit his ex-partner.

“From the roof, he was seen to be throwing slates to the floor,” said Ms Ahmed, who explained Cassidy had also threatened people with a four-foot piece of wood and a metal bar.

“It was only when a police negotiator came to the scene and spoke to the defendant that he came down off the roof.”

Cassidy was taken to Scarborough Hospital where he kicked and smashed a glass door after being refused treatment.

Taryn Turner, defending, said: “For four days and nights the defendant went without sleep, but continued to take drugs.

“When he is under the influence of drugs, he is a different man than the man I have spoken to by videolink this morning.”

She added that Cassidy’s “drug of choice” was cocaine.

Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, jailed Cassidy for three months for the offences on February 5 and 21 months for those on February 9, with the sentences running consecutively.

He said: “The big problem we have is that this behaviour is something that you have repeated time and time again.

“Your last appearance in crown court was in respect of an almost identical roof-top siege.”
