A RYEDALE business is to feature on a television programme to find the nation’s best independent, family run or community bakery.

Auntie’s Anne’s bakery, in Helmsley, was nominated for Britain’s Best Bakery which is being aired over four weeks until December 21.

Susan Smithson, who runs the bakery with her mother Anne Barnes, said film crews had spent two days at the business filming staff making two of their best sellers – Yorkshire curd tarts and steak pies.

Susan said: “From there we were invited to take part in a ‘Baker’s Challenge’ where we competed against two other bakers in the county making Yorkshire parkin.

“The results of that stage will be shown next week and people will find out whether or not we get through to the next stage.”

Susan said they had been thrilled to get on the programme.

“We did enjoy taking part, it was a really good experience and a nice thing for everyone here to do,” she said.

“If you think of how many bakers there are in Yorkshire it is fantastic that we have got through to the last three which is quite an honour.”

Auntie Anne’s Bakery will appear on Britain’s Best Bakery on ITV1 at 4pm on Tuesday, December 11.
