THE head of classics at The Read School in Drax has attended a European conference to learn about harnessing the power of ICT resources in classics teaching.

Annette Oliver was one of only three UK classics teachers and the only one from the North of England, to be chosen to attend the CIRCE course in Aquileia in Italy earlier this month.

Annette said: “Just to be part of a pan-European group of classicists was a wonderful experience and with nine different languages being spoken conversation was never dull. We all learned so much about how inspiring classics teaching remains in so many different countries and how the influence of the Greek and Roman cultures is still shaping today’s societies across Europe.

“We all developed practical ICT solutions to use in our classrooms to help bring the subject to life for today’s generation of pupils.”

An added benefit was the opportunity to forge new contacts with European schools and Annette is already in discussions with schools in Holland and other countries regarding the possibility of eTwinning with The Read School.
