AN Earl and the leader of a popular York uprising against the Government, will be among Christians whose deaths will be remembered at a special service next month.
The Knights of St Columba 95, a Catholic lay organisation, have organised the event at the York Tyburn to commemorate more than 50 Catholic martyrs who died for their faith in York under the Tudor and Stuart monarchs.
Among names to be read out during the service will be Robert Aske, leader of the 1536 Pilgrimage of Grace against the Dissolution of the Monasteries and other actions by Henry VIII; Thomas Percy, Earl of Northumberland, beheaded under Elizabeth I; St Margaret Clitherow, who died on Ouse Bridge and who has a shrine dedicated to her in Shambles where she lived, and Nicholas Postgate, known as Martyr of the Moors, who lived and worked in Ryedale and the North York Moors. He was one of the last Catholics to be executed for their faith in England and died in 1679.
About 80 per cent of the martyrs died under Elizabeth I when having mass said in a person’s house carried the death sentence. Many were priests.
Father John Bane of English Martyrs RC Church, in Dalton Terrace, York, will lead the prayers.
The service will be held at York Tyburn on the Tadcaster Road side of Knavesmire near the pedestrian and bicycle crossing to Little Hob Moor on August 16 at 7.30pm.
