IT’S a scarcely believable 35 years since Tom Petty released Anything That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and began his scorching journey into the heart of that elusive American dream.

There have been plenty of highs on the way, with tracks like I Won’t Back Down, First Flash Of Freedom and American Girl firmly establishing Petty as one of the finest songwriters and musicians of his generation.

All three of these songs are included on Mojo: The Tour Edition, a limited edition CD featuring 12 live tracks, together with Mojo, Petty’s most recent album.

Petty’s voice isn’t quite what it was, but the musicianship is exemplary both live and in the studio. Mojo itself features a number of bluesy numbers which meander gently along, without going anywhere in particular.

There are a couple of highlights – The Trip To Pirate’s Cove is a classic slice of Petty Americana and No Reason To Cry is an absolutely gorgeous country song, but it is live tracks here which remind us of Petty’s glory days.
