COMEBACK queens City of York Hockey Club Under-13 girls A' team have been crowned North Yorkshire champions.

They beat Scarborough 1-0 in the final at Thirsk with a Sarah Clay goal to gain revenge on the Seasiders, who snatched victory in the opening Pool Two game earlier in the day.

Scarborough went on to win the pool, while York bounced back to beat Cundall Manor School 5-0 with goals from Hannah Garnett (2), Georgina Grant (2) and Charlotte McDermottroe.

Grant then scored five times in the 7-0 win over Ripon Cathedral Choir School which sealed qualification to the semi-finals. Clay and Garnett got the other goals.

The semi-final against Whitby could have gone either way and York were indebted to some solid defensive work from Amber Moorcroft and Lauren Boddison before McDermottroe netted a late winner.

York will represent North Yorkshire in the Yorkshire finals at Scarborough College on Sunday, February 25.

York U13 girls B' team started well in Pool 1 with a 2-0 win against Thirsk with goals from Emma Hessay and Becky Glen. They then lost 1-0 to Harrogate and 2-0 to Whitby.

York's U10 girls A' team made an excellent start to their Yorkshire Youth League season at Huntington School.

They began with a 4-0 win over Kirklees which saw Sally Hicks score a hat-trick.

Hicks was also on target in a 3-0 win over Slazengers A' which also saw Olivia Garnett and Emily Watson on the scoresheet.

York then beat their own B' team 7-1 with goals from Hicks, Katie Birch (2), Alice Greswold (2), Garnett and Isabel Hall the scorers.

The match saw the Birch twins up against each other and it was Becca Birch who scored the York U10 girls B' goal.

Strong defence by Alex Newton, Helen Megone and Alice Greswold enabled York A' to wrap up a tight 1-0 win against Harrogate, Garnett scoring the goal.

York completed the session with a 100 per cent winning record with Watson (2) and Garnett netting in a 3-0 victory against Ben Rhydding.

York U10 B' fielded mainly new players taking part in their first matches and despite losing all their games, showed improvement as the tournament progressed.

They started with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Harrogate. It was followed by losses to Kirklees (2-0), York A' (7-1), Ben Rhydding (1-0) and Slazengers A' (4-0).

City of York Boys U14 A' enjoyed a clean sweep in their Yorkshire Youth league fixtures at Castleford.

They started with an unconvincing 2-1 win against a Doncaster side fielding four county players with goals from Luke Chambers-Smith and Michael Sansoni.

York put on a sparkling show in their second game to beat Rotherham 6-0 with strikes from Chambers-Smith, Alfred Chase, Sansoni (2), Charlie Green and a superb solo effort from Jonathan Kilmartin.

Goals by Bonney and Sansoni earned a 2-0 win over Leeds and a clean sweep.

Pick of the York players were Johnny Kilmartin and new team member Mathew Collinson at left and right half respectively.
