YORK City Ladies found themselves nursing a cup hangover as Barnsley Ladies topped them 1-0 in a dreary North East premier division battle at Oaklands.

The Minster Ladies were a shadow of the cup-conquering side of the previous week and the game was settled after panicky defending as the half-time whistle approached.

A spell of sustained pressure from Barnsley ended up with a poor clearance landing at the feet of their troublesome number ten and her turn and instant shot fizzed across the face of goalkeeper Lottie Simpson and in off the post.

Manager Paul Ryan said: "We tried hard enough but never really got going. We are at our best when players are winning tackles and attacking at pace, everything was off the mark though.

"Passes went astray, possession lost cheaply and we just didn't cause them enough problems."

City Ladies travel to Northumbria to play Lumley tomorrow, while the Reserves go to Scarborough in a bid to build on their strong start to the season.

They managed to tip the balance against Sheriff Hutton 4-0 on their last outing, with Charley Woodward (2), Jenna Strain and Carol Thompson on target.
