BOXING legend Henry Wharton remains in hospital with serious injuries after he was struck by a car following an alleged organised bare knuckle fight between travellers.
The 44-year-old – a former undefeated European, Commonwealth and British super-middleweight champion – suffered head and back injuries following the incident in Murton Lane on Saturday. It is thought Mr Wharton was injured after he intervened in a pre-arranged fight.
His injuries are not said to be life-threatening.
A 35-year-old man was arrested at the travellers’ site in James Street, York, on Sunday in connection with Saturday’s incident. He was later released on bail.
Residents reported seeing heightened police activity and helicopter searches over the weekend following the incident.
