POLICE in North Yorkshire have arrested 44 people suspected of drink or drug driving as part of their summer crackdown.

Of those arrested since June 1, 28 have appeared before court and eight drink-drivers have been banned from the roads.

They include a 47-year-old woman who was more than three times the legal limit when officers breathalysed her in Knaresbrough on June 7 after her car rolled back into another vehicle.

She gave a positive reading of 119 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, against a legal limit of 35.

She was given a 28-month driving ban, a 24-month conditional discharge and was fined £75.

Eleven suspected drink or drug drivers are on police bail pending further inquiries and six have been released without further action.

A 25-year-old man remains in police custody on suspicion of drug-driving after being stopped in Scarborough on Thursday.

Traffic Sergeant Pete Stringer, who is co-ordinating the campaign, said: “It is astounding that despite all the warnings and well-documented dangers of drink and drug driving that people are still willing to take a chance.”
