AS WE were saying last week, shutting the busy westbound section of the A64 was bound to cause chaos. And so it has proved.

Long tailbacks built up yesterday and are likely to last until the weekend.

To an extent, this is inevitable. Yet wouldn't the congestion have been reduced if the work had been carried out when the road was less busy, say between 9pm and 6am?

We made that suggestion last week and now, in the middle of a jammed up week, it still sounds like a sensible idea.

Perhaps someone might be listening the next time the A64 needs fixing.
