The world championships of one of the wettest and wildest adrenaline sports could be on its way to Scarborough after a successful showcase weekend.

Thundercat racing is a fast-paced sea version of rallying where racers speed round a 400 metres by 200m five-buoy circuit in the shape of an M', including a chicane.

The sport made its first visit to the East Coast waters and the venue made such a splash it is being hotly tipped to host next year's world championships.

Urban renaissance manager Nick Taylor, who helped bring the event to Scarborough, said: "They are very keen indeed to bring the world championships here and if it's confirmed, it will be the first time it will be held in the Northern hemisphere.

"There's such a big following in places like South Africa and New Zealand but it's really growing in this country too."

Scarborough Borough Council and Scarborough's Future teamed up to encourage the international powerboat scene to come north and Fiona Pascoe of M2M Racing Club - the driving force of Thundercat Racing - was only too keen to introduce the town to its potential.

A total of 11 teams made the trip north for the two-day event with four six-lap races with up to ten boats in each and a nine-lap final on each day.

Added Taylor: "The hospitality was great and the surf was great but also the fact that it's something new.

"On the south coast, these things are ten-a-penny so everyone's falling over themselves to get a venue in the north.

"As well as all that, the hotels are really good and the locals welcoming.

"If we can pull off the worlds, which is looking very likely, it will be great for the town and they are even talking about establishing a club round here."

A decision on the destination of the world championships is expected within the week.
