TWO male voice choirs are joining forces at a concert in York to raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s charities.

The York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir and Berwick Male Voice Choir will be performing at St Michael le Belfrey Church, near the Minster, at 7.30pm on Saturday.

Organisers say that with both choirs coming from different musical backgrounds, concert goers can expect to hear a wide variety of contemporary music and also more classical music.

Pieces performed will range from a medley from the musical Oliver! and Tydi a Roddaist, composed by Arwel Hughes, to Two Little Boys, a song made famous by Rolf Harris. There will also be a number of solo pieces, both voice and instrumental, during the course of the evening.

The Lord Mayor’s charities are York Against Cancer and York Mind.

Roger Samwell, secretary of the York choir, praised the generosity of the Berwick chor, which would be travelling from the Scottish Borders at a cost to themselves.

He said: “This helps to highlight and encapsulate the spirit of the evening.”

James Blythe, chairman of the Berwick choir, said it was delighted to be part of the musical extravaganza.

He said: “It goes without saying that all of us are affected by cancer in some way and anything we can do to support those suffering from it is a duty that we must all accept.

“Our singing will come from our hearts; we aim to give you a concert to remember.”

• Anyone wishing to attend the concert can purchase tickets from the Guildhall reception during office hours or by phoning 01759 380941 or 01904 728423, with tickets priced at £10.
