The first phase of a new Community Woodland has been officially opened in Selby.

Almost 5,000 trees have been planted at the Selby Community Woodland in Bondgate with the help of three local schools, while there are also footpaths and benches.

The Selby Community Trust has also secured almost £50,000 in grants and donations from the Woodland Trust, to employ a local artist to create new unique sculptures for the site. Councillor Steve Shaw-Wright said: “It was heartening to see a really good turn out at the opening.

Flaxley Road and Abbey Primary Schools were there to participate in the event, and children from the schools had planted some of the trees. I am looking forward to the start of phase two, with local artist Alisa Magnus working with schools to install sculptures on the site.”

The project has been made possible with help from Groundwork North Yorkshire, grants from Big Lottery Community Spaces, The Big Tree Plant, Drax Power LFC, Eggborough Power, North Yorkshire County Council and the Selby Central Community Engagement Forum.
