THE end is nigh for York’s Splash Palace in Parliament Street, as work to demolish the public toilet block is almost complete.

The block was built 21 years ago but closed in 2010, when new facilities opened in Silver Street, off Newgate Market.

In recent weeks, work has been carried out to flatten the block, and the roof has now been removed exposing the pillars.

City of York Council said it hoped the majority of the materials used in the building would be recycled. The work is due to finish before the ceremony to formally announce York’s new Lord Mayor, which will be held in May, but it is not yet certain what will take the building’s place.
