Malton snooker ace Lee Taylor lifted the York Conservative Clubs’ Renaissance Windows Scruton Cup after a 3-0 final win over Heworth’s Clive Whyte.

Taylor, entering the competition for the first time, fired in breaks of 34 and 22 to win the opening frame against three-time winner Whyte at Bootham.

The Malton player took the second frame 55-27 and won the third 56-45 after Whyte missed the blue in attempting to snatch the frame by clearing the colours.

As well as the Scruton Cup, presented by sponsor Adrian Barraclough, Taylor was given a second award for the highest break in the competition – a run of 53.

Taylor failed in his bid to reach the final of the Fosters Challenge Handicapped Snooker Knockout, losing 2-1 to Fulford’s Tim Lister in the semi-finals.

A 53 break and two 20s won the Malton player the first frame, but Lister won two scrappy frames to take the match.

Lister will play Phil Carlton in the final at Bootham on Monday, at 7.30pm, after the Acomb cueman beat Heworth’s Neil Wood 2-1.

A pair of 20 breaks earned Wood the opener, but Carlton levelled before two small breaks helped him win the decider.

Meanwhile, Malton increased their lead to six points with only two games remaining with a 4-3 win over Heworth ‘B’ in the Carlsberg UK Snooker League.

Darren Colledge and Vic Gamble gave Heworth an ideal start, but Simon Weatherill (33 break), Taylor, Andrew Sherry and Roger Ward decided the match before Andy Ireland made it 4-3.

Bottom team Bootham ‘A’ completed a 4-3 win double over Heworth ‘A’ to dent their opponents’ title challenge.

Rob Barron and Chris Dower opened Bootham’s account, only for Kevin Gall to reply.

Tim Fillingham restored Bootham’s two-frame advantage and, although Steve Burdett clawed one back, John Darley sealed the match by holding off Whyte (29 break).

Neil Wood took the last frame for Heworth after a break of 42.

Third-placed Acomb ‘A’ saw their four-game winning run halted as they lost 4-3 to Bootham ‘B’.

Wins for Bootham’s Jeff Brown (29 break) and Matt Smith were cancelled out by Andy Wade and Paul Holmes, but Paul Mahoney and Paul Scorfield completed Bootham’s win before Barraclough pulled a frame back.

Fulford ‘B’ were 4-3 winners over Acomb ‘B’ thanks to victories for Andy Ogley, Bob Smith, Arthur Pegden and Nigel Smith.

Keith Myers, John Ashwell and Steve Rodgers were the Acomb victors.

Two ‘B’ teams will go head to head in the final of the Kutters & Shannons Team Snooker Cup for the first time when Fulford and Heworth meet at Acomb on Wednesday, April 11, following the annual presentations’ ceremony.

Fulford are contesting their third final in four years, hoping to fare better than in their 2009 defeat to Bootham ‘A’ and their 2010 loss against Malton ‘A’.
