DAVID CAMERON assuring us “there will be no selling-off of our roads!” fills me with apprehension because that’s exactly what will happen. This is doomed to be another ill-thought-out scheme.

Our road system will fall into disrepair. The private companies who own the roads will be loathe, like the companies who ‘run’ the so-called privatised rail system, to pay to keep these vital roads in good condition.

So, once again, the taxpayer will be forced to pay towards another privately owned system. Then pay a toll to use them!

It is doubtful one company could afford to run the entire system. So there will be a shambolic grid of toll booths on the roads as each company collects its share of the booty.

The rail system is (possibly) going to get a high-speed railway line between London and Birmingham at a cost of billions and all paid for by the taxpayer. Would this same largesse be applied to any future road building? Of course it would!

Our road system is too vital to be privatised. Adding a toll to every HGV at the myriad toll-booths would add an incredible amount to road-haulage costs, which would have to be passed on.
