DAVID Quarrie states that the Conservative Party has suddenly brought the subject of legal marriage to the political stage (Letters, March 19).
However, it was as long ago as May, 2010 that Theresa May launched the Conservatives’ equalities manifesto, prior to the election.
On page 14 of this manifesto it clearly states: “We will also consider the case for changing the law to allow civil partnerships to be called and classified as marriage.”
Some MPs may have wrongly stated that this was not a Conservative issue that was included in the manifesto as it was an issue that they were elected on.
Some religious organisations are very much against this, but the law will have no impact on them in the same way that civil partnerships are not legally forced on churches.
