MATT’S the way to do it was the mantra for Acomb Hockey Club men’s first XI, who rallied to beat visiting Sheffield Hallam VI 3-2 in the Yorkshire League fourth division.

Though they entertained the anchor outfit, Acomb’s initial over-confidence led to Sheffield taking a 2-0 lead.

Eventually Sheffield’s hold was broken by Matt Dickenson after Acomb ran an innovative short-corner routine.

The Tangerines were far sharper in the second half, while their opponents grew tetchier as they felt many of the umpiring decisions did not go their way.

This manifested itself in two Hallam players each receiving a yellow card.

Acomb took advantage to level courtesy of Dickenson again, his arrow-like strike clattering the backboard.

As the home pressure increased, Sheffield buckled again and conceded another short corner.

Dickenson produced yet more flair to come up with an unorthodox set-piece to complete his hat-trick, confirm all three pioints for the Tangerines and earn the man-of-the-match award.

The men’s II and III games were cancelled due to lack of players.

A high-energy performance yielded a stirring 2-0 Yorkshire League premier division win for Acomb Ladies I over second-placed visitors Leeds University IV.

Throughout the hosts dominated with slick passing and tigerish defence and after several misses Acomb broke the deadlock when Liz Harrison swept home a Vicky Wrigley pass.

The students’ severe pressure was then thwarted by the back three of Jane Elsworth, Kerry Woods and Sally Harrison.

Acomb’s defence was even more occupied in the second half but Georgi Wood was outstanding as they hung on to their precious lead.

The hosts then scored one of their best goals of the campaign when Sue Yoward threw herself at full stretch to guide the ball home after superb build-up play between Sasha Taylor and Wendy Watson.
