A DRAMATIC penalty shoot-out defeat ended York Schoolboys’ bid for English Schools’ FA Under-15s Inter Association Trophy glory.

The Minster city boys drew 1-1 with hosts Newcastle in the quarter-final clash, but then missed out 4-2 on spot-kicks at Newcastle United’s Academy.

Newcastle took the lead on 20 minutes when they broke quickly.

York rallied and Henry Swires went close to equalising but his set-piece effort hit the crossbar.

Adam Swords went close with a header before York’s pressure was rewarded on the stroke of half-time when Dylan Howlett finished brilliantly following link-up play with Adam Swords.

The second half saw both teams create chances and York went close through Tom Robinson and Jake Rose. Newcastle’s pressure was thwarted by man of the match and captain Evan Tyson.

York looked like winning in the final minute as a Howlett cross just evaded the stretching Callum Hirst with the net gaping.

Manager Matt Gore said: “This squad has gone further than any other York U15 team since 1904.

They are magnificent.”

York U14s completed their league campaign unbeaten after a 1-1 draw at Bradford but must await results elsewhere to see if they will be crowned champions.

York took the lead after Joey McCormick cut the ball back from the byline for Matty Parker to fire home. Five minutes from time the equaliser came with a tap-in after York failed to clear. Parker had one last, late effort, but a left-foot shot grazed the crossbar.

York U13s beat West Yorkshire League rivals Leeds 3-2, withstanding a fightback from their hosts after racing into a three-goal lead.

York were gifted the opening goal when a Leeds centre-half diverted an Aran Clarke corner into the net.

Man of the match George Brown then helped himself to a brace, the first a long-range effort that found the top corner and the second following a sweeping four-player move.

On the stroke of half-time Leeds gained a foothold with a goal and the second period was a real battle but Leeds could not score until the dying seconds.

York remain unbeaten in the league with home fixtures against Bradford and Sheffield to play.

York U12s were 3-1 winners at Leeds. Man of the match Joe Kilvington was superb in defence, while York’s goalscorers were Donald Chimalilo, Milo Shore and Zak Lawrence.

York U11s drew 0-0 with the Wirral in their latest Trans- Pennine Premiership fixture, while they slumped to a 5-3 loss to Leeds in a league match.

In a friendly at Gainsborough, York won 3-0 thanks to a brace of goals from Reece Botterill and a Ritchie Deighton strike.
