YOUR edition of February 8 featured a letter from Mr J Smith explaining how he was beaten for eating a Wrights pork pie (which he described as “the nearest thing to heaven I could recall”).

I have many recollections of events surrounding our family's pork pies but not one to equal this.

Recently an email was received from America saying that the sender had served his apprenticeship at Wrights of York, and did that qualify him to be a member of the York Butchers’ Gild?

It did, and as a member attended the Shrove Tuesday Feast in Merchant Taylors’ Hall this week. He was accompanied by his wife, whom he met at our firm.

As I was involved with the introduction of apprenticeships in the Yorkshire area, this gave me considerable pleasure.

I am sorry that the present site at Skelton, now owned by the Del Monte Co, has lost a large contract and the the operation is under threat.

For the sake of jobs in the area I hope that they will soon find a good answer to the problem.
