BON Marche has no plans to leave Goodramgate, the store has said, following an article in The Press about Tesco Express moving into the York street.

Tesco Express will move into Christian Marcus Direct (CMD) and developers Town Centre Securities said there were no plans to increase the size of the Tesco store into Bon Marche.

Bon Marche said that its store in Acomb was earmarked for closure and the York store would serve all its customers in the York area. The business was bought out of the administration of Peacocks, by Sun Capital Partners in January.

Suzanne Gallagher, asset manager at Town Centre Securities, said: “Tesco Express is a welcome addition to Goodramgate, bringing new jobs to the area and enhancing the retail offer. It’s in an ideal location for office workers who want to pop in for a sandwich or for a few items on their way home.

“We believe the new store will increase pedestrian traffic which will benefit other nearby businesses and we look forward to it opening soon.”
