FREE-SCORING Rawcliffe continued their winning trend with an 11-1 victory over Poppleton in the York FA Under-19s Football league.

A fantastic pitch produced a game of flowing football from both teams in a tightly contested first half, with league leaders Rawcliffe going in with a flattering 4-0 lead.

Opponents Poppleton had matched them over the first period and could feel hard done by to be on the end of an early four-goal blast.

Rawcliffe went from strength to strength after half-time and managed to notch another seven goals.

The 11 Rawcliffe strikes included four braces from Josh Whaite, Reg Miah, Robin Jefferson and Calum Ward.

Though Poppleton did manage a consolation on the hour through Adam Graver, it was not enough to stop the top of the table side from producing a dominant win.

Rawcliffe’s Steve Jarman was singled out by coach Graham Ward for a “a fantastic first half performance in which he dominated the midfield”.

Man of the match Jarman also managed to get himself among the scorers along with team-mates Jack Stevenson and Lewis Rhodes.

Rawcliffe’s next fixture sees them take on near rivals Rawcliffe Rangers, who are fifth in the table.

Fourth-placed Wigginton Grasshoppers came up against a solid goalkeeper as they narrowly beat Easingwold Town 2-1.

Wigginton spent the majority of the game on top, but poor finishing and excellent ’keeping from Town’s Ollie Stirk ensured a tight game.

Wigginton edged it through goals by Dan Welborn and Dom Johnson. John Dey responded for Easingwold.

A bottom of the table clash saw Strensall climb off the foot of the division with a comfortable victory.

The 4-1 win saw them leapfrog opponents Thorpe United into 11th place.

Liam Walker, Joe Davison, Nathan O’Dwyer and Charlie Coupland netted for Strensall, while Thorpe’s reply came from Dale Spratt.

Fulford and Rawcliffe Rangers shared the spoils, despite the goalscoring efforts of Fulford’s Keiran Flannagan and Nick Turnbull.

Rawcliffe gave as much as they got, with well-taken goals by Akif Akay and Dan Wilson to ensure a point from a closely fought 2-2 draw.

Harrogate Town maintained the pressure on leaders Rawcliffe as they recorded a convincing 3-0 win over eighthplaced Heworth.

Heworth were undone by Benjy Slater and Josh Garbutt, who ended the game with two goals.

Seventh-placed Copmanthorpe closed the gap on Harrogate Railway to one point and one place with a 3-1 victory.

On target for Copmanthorpe where youngsters Olly Bird, Jonah Beecher and Nicky May.
