YORK RSPCA is looking for animal lovers to help re-home their newest additions – more than 40 pet rats.

Having been rescued by an inspector in November, a pack of six rats – one male, five females -– surprised staff at the re-homing centre on Landing Lane when they discovered all the females were pregnant.

The litters were all born within two weeks of each other, leaving the centre with 39 baby rats and their mothers to re-home.

Marie Sandall, animal welfare supervisor, said: “We split them up as soon as they arrived at the centre, but they were already pregnant.

“They are extremely intelligent and make great pets. Most of the rats are hooded rats, although there are some hairless ones and Dumbo ones too.”

Since they are such social animals, the babies must be re-homed as a pair or a group. If you think you can help, phone York RSPCA animals home on 01904 654949.
