ONE of York's newest tour companies has pledged its full support for the Evening Press Make York Sparkle campaign to light up the city this Christmas.

Exploring Food, a gastronomic tour of York's finest eateries and delicatessens, is getting behind York Business Pride's Christmas Lights Appeal by taking part in the fundraising day in St Sampson's Square on Saturday. The event has been organised primarily by Keith Mulhearn, manager of the Eboracum Legion Bathhouse, on the square.

Departing from the square, three 90-minute walking tours will take tourists and residents alike on a visit to restaurants, delicatessens and places connected to the history of food in York.

Matthew Greenwood, who runs the company with his father Keith, said all proceeds from the day's tours would go directly into the lights fund.

"We wanted to do something to help raise the profile of the Christmas Lights appeal. It is crucially important for tourism in York that we have a good display at Christmas, especially if York can be compared unfavourably with other cities like Lincoln," said Matthew, who launched Exploring Food with his father on September 2.

As well as visiting historically significant landmarks such as Shambles, the food tour allows participants to chat to the owners of restaurants and delicatessens.

"These restaurateurs and shop-owners are utterly passionate about food, and meeting them gives people the chance to check out places they might like to revisit," said Matthew.

Since one-and-a-half-hours' walking will work up a good appetite, tour members can enjoy nibbles on the way, including chocolates and other goodies.

Tours will start outside the National Railway Museum gift shop in St Sampson's Square at 11am, 2pm and 5pm, costing £3.50 for adults and £2 for children. Turn up on the day no later than 15 minutes before the tour. For more information about Exploring Food, phone Matthew Greenwood on 07981 242764.
