A HEALTHY breakfast club was an early port of call for a General Election candidate.

Hugh Bayley, Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for York, visited the Funfishers Club at Fishergate Primary School, York to sample what out-of-hours facilities were on the menu for children.

The club, which is heavily oversubscribed, provides healthy food and care between 8am and 8.45am - allowing working parents the chance to leave their children safety while they work. After school, there is similar provision made from 3.15pm to 5.30pm, and also during school holidays.

Mr Bayley said: "Funfishers is a great example of how the school supports parents. The Labour government has already helped to introduce 8,000 out of school clubs nationally. I want to make sure that every school pupil has the chance to benefit from clubs like this one."

Andy Herbert, Fishergate Primary School head, said: "Fishergate School is a warm and welcoming place where all children are cared for and given the best opportunities to learn."
