LET'S keep our feet on the ground while walking as tall as we should.

That was the reaction of York City Knights chairman Roger Dixon on his side's LHF National League Two triumph.

The "immensely proud" club chief described the title triumph as a "step in the right direction" but warned there was much work to do if the ultimate dream of Super League is achieved.

The last two promoted clubs, Keighley Cougars and Barrow Raiders, have both come straight back down after a year in National League One, and Dixon said: "Lifting the NL2 trophy was a wonderful occasion but only a step on the way to what we want to achieve.

"Recent history dictates that life in NL1 for a promoted club is very challenging and if we want to secure a foothold in that division each of us at the club must renew our endeavours."

Dixon took time out to again laud long-time fan Gary Hall for setting the ball rolling towards the formation of the Knights following the demise of the old York Wasps club, and said the three seasons since then had been a wonderful experience.

"It was just over three years ago when we got together the £75,000 we needed for York to return to the rugby league family," he said.

"There were those who thought rugby league had had its day in York and I think we are all indebted to Gary Hall, who convened that first crisis meeting back in 2002 after the Wasps died.

"There have been many characters along the way and already in the hall of fame are names like Steve Ferres, Paul Broadbent, Lee Jackson, Mick Ramsden, Danny Brough and so many more.

"But what about the unsung and the unseen. The programme sellers, the turnstiles operators, the volunteers. They are all heroes, while this club is going nowhere without the input of directors John Guildford and Dave Gorwood. No-one should underestimate the input of John for the financial health of the club."

He added: "To the playing squad and the back-room staff, I take off my hat. I am so respectful of the commitment of these gentlemen. To all of our heroes, thank you for giving us these very special moments."
