SUPERMARKET staff ditched their usual uniforms to boost the Red Cross tsunami appeal.

Workers at Tesco Extra, at Clifton Moor, York, paid £2 each to dress down yesterday, to help push their fundraising for the charity past the £15,000 mark.

Meanwhile, civic leaders have joined forces to thank contributors to the York Aid appeal, which stands at £61,674, and other collections set up in the city to help rebuild shattered communities across South East Asia.

City of York Council leader Steve Galloway put on record the authority's sympathy for victims and relatives of the dead, which he said included six from York and the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, VJ's Art Bar, in Finkle Street, York, is hosting a buffet of Indian food between noon and 3pm tomorrow. Anyone wishing to indulge must pay £10, all of which will go to the tsunami appeal. The bar has already collected £200.
