A NATIONAL Islamic organisation visited York to express its thanks for the help given by Yorkshire soldiers to transport aid to earthquake victims in Pakistan.
Jehanger Malik, the national fundraising manager of the Islamic Relief organisation, and north east manager Waseem Ali thanked Brigadier Richard Dennis, the top Army officer in Yorkshire and the north east.
The relief organisation also presented Brig Dennis with a Certificate of Appreciation.
The earthquake last October prompted a mass of donations to Islamic Relief collection points throughout Yorkshire.
Getting the aid to Birmingham was a problem, but word spread to Army recruiting staff, who contacted their headquarters in York and the order was given for the aid to be transported by the military.
Mr Malik said: "Time was critical and crucial and the Army transporting the goods to Birmingham meant that it was quicker for the depot to clear and process the aid."
