An East Coast Main Line train was derailed when it hit a car on the track.
The car driver was killed in the collision, which happened when the Edinburgh to Plymouth Virgin service was heading through Copmanthorpe, near York.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said no passengers were injured when the train was "partially derailed", and they were being helped from the train.
The collision at Moor Lane occurred at 8.55pm last night.
The police spokesman stressed that there were no reported injuries among the 74 passengers on the diesel train.
