COUNCIL officials have praised the generous donations of residents across York to the disaster appeal - but warned donors to make sure they give only to bona-fide collectors.
Dick Haswell, York council's head of licensing, said: "These pictures we're seeing in York of buckets overflowing with money are absolutely wonderful, but we want to ensure that all donations go directly to help those who are suffering and not into the hands of unscrupulous collectors".
Mr Haswell advised would-be donors to check that the collector is: o Wearing an ID badge and displaying a local authority licence o Has a sealed container bearing the charity name or registration number o Working for the charity or has a written agreement to collect on behalf of that charity.
He also urged organisations who would like to collect on the streets, in a public place, or door-to-door, to contact the licensing team to get the necessary permit.
