YORK'S second festival for the over-50s is set to feature a showcase of talent - from Egyptian dancing and magic, to jazz and folk music.

The York 50+ Festival, which started at the weekend, includes a big show at York Theatre Royal at 2pm on Friday afternoon.

"What more delightful way to spend an autumn afternoon?" asked festival founder and co-ordinator, Sue Lister.

"This is a chance for people to meet old friends and make new ones, while sharing the pleasure of a good show, from folk music, jazz and show tunes to magic, Egyptian Dance and even a spot of Charles Dickens.

"This will be a showcase of talent, allowing people to support their local artists and performers and enjoy a thoroughly lively afternoon of entertainment.

"People can bring their friends and stay for afternoon tea in the theatre caf."

The first half will feature jazz singer, Lynne Ecroyd, accompanied by a trumpeter and pianist.

There will also be poets including Rose Drew and Alan Gillott, magician Paul Martin, songs from well-known shows and anecdotes by Reg Price.

In addition, Charles Hunt will read an extract from the works of Charles Dickens.

The second half of Friday's show will feature Egyptian dancing by Jane Wass and Mazazik, as well poets and folk trio Two Black Sheep And A Stallion.

Meanwhile more people can still register to take part in an Olympics-style sports contest for the over 50s.

The event, organised by the York Older People's Assembly, is organising the first 50+ Games at several venues across the York area next Sunday.

The Press has helped to organize a prize of two nights at a top Blackpool hotel, including tickets to visit the famous tower, for the overall winner of the contest.The sporting champ will win two nights bed and breakfast accommodation in the luxurious AA-rated three-star Carousel Hotel, including dinner on the first night.

Refurbished only two years ago, the hotel is ideally located on the premier South Promenade, close to all of Blackpool's attractions. The prize has been offered by Sleepwell Hotels.
