FORMER Barnsley coach Eric Winstanley has been placed in charge of York City's juniors, initially on a one-month basis.

Winstanley, 63, has taken up the reins after temporary appointment Neil Richardson stepped down following Ian Kerr's resignation due to health reasons in the summer.

He has been training with City's trainees this week and travelled to Hull City for this morning's Football League Youth Alliance match.

Winstanley was Neil Redfearn's assistant manager at Scarborough last season but is best known for a coaching career at Oakwell that spanned 24 years.

Having played for the Tykes from 1960 to 1973, centre-back Winstanley returned to the South Yorkshire club after spending four years with Chesterfield following a £15,000 transfer fee.

He was part of the coaching team that famously guided Barnsley into the Premier League, working under Danny Wilson and alongside current Minstermen reserve coach Colin Walker.

Winstanley also twice took charge of Barnsley's first team on a caretaker basis for three games at the end of the 1998/1999 season following John Hendrie's departure and for five games between December 2000 and January 2001 before Dave Bassett was replaced by Nigel Spackman.

In total, as a player and a coach, Winstanley spent 37 years at Oakwell during two spells before leaving in May 2001.

Since then, he has been the technical director of St Kitts and Nevis' national team in the East Caribbean, coached in Zanzibar and been youth team manager at Doncaster Rovers during the 2004/2005 season before joining Redfearn at the McCain Stadium.

City's juniors will be hoping for an improved result in Hull after going down 2-0 at home to Scunthorpe last Saturday when Chas Wrigley was also shown a red card.

There are no Centre of Excellence fixtures this weekend.
