Poppleton Tigers are looking forward to a run in the York FA Senior Minor (Under-16s) Cup as they bounce back from a 5-3 league defeat against Pickering Town.

The Pikes reverse was Tigers’ third in seven games but they are still third in division one of the York Minor League.

George Sykes gave Poppleton the lead and, although Pickering levelled before half-time, Josh Shepherd netted to nudge the hosts ahead.

However, Town forged 5-2 in front before Tigers bagged an own goal.

Poppleton travel to Thorpe United tomorrow (1.30pm) in round two of a competition they have yet to win as a team.

Manager Mark Chilton said: “We got to the final a couple of years ago and we have got to the semis before. Hopefully this will be our year in the team’s last season together.

“We are not a team of superstars, but some of these lads have played together since they were five years old and they are doing well.”

Last weekend’s victors Pickering, meanwhile, will host Brooklyn in a round two Ryedale derby tomorrow.

All junior York FA cups stage second round fixtures tomorrow, from U11s to U19s.

For the first time this season, there will be no extra time in competitions at U16s level and below, with drawn matches going straight to penalties.

There will be extra time and penalties in the U19s ties.
