A DOMINATING performance from York Acorn ARLC Under-18s against top-tier leaders Skirlaugh Bulls saw them storm into round two of the Yorkshire Youth League Cup.

Acorn, of division one, shocked the premier division front-runners 38-0.

The game was never in doubt from the moment half-back Joel Johnson side-stepped through to put the first points on the board. By half-time, Acorn had a comfortable 20-0 lead after tries from Jack Scarce, Kyle Brown (2) and a goal each for Liam Cashmore and Ryan Duffill.

Acorn’s dominance continued and further tries from Cashmore, Tim Stubbs, Gareth Smith and Johnson, plus a Joe Porter goal, rounded off a fine day.

The victory was built not only on a strong defence, which kept the Hull side scoreless, but also on strong running from the likes of Stubbs, Porter, Scarce and man-of-the-match centre Jacob Scales.

Heworth U17s reached the League Cup quarter-finals with a 44-18 win over injury-hit Wetherby U17s.

The Bulldogs gave an excellent first-half display, leading 12-0 early on and 18-10 after an interception try, but the Villagers went up a gear.

Heworth tries came from Oliver Franks, Harry Deighton, second-rower Luke Caddy and, in the second half as Wetherby tired, Caddy, chipping the defence and regathering the ball, William Barratt, man-of-the-match Josh Poulter, Jack Rowson and Caddy again to complete his hat-trick.

Deighton added six goals, while Alec Spowage, in his first game of the season, and Adam Lovett also impressed.

York Acorn U16s fell down to earth with a bump when they crashed 44-6 at King Cross Park.

The home forwards dominated from the off and, although Acorn held out under some severe pressure, once the defence was breached, the floodgates opened, and by half-time the score was 26-0.

Acorn had the King Cross defence stretched a few times after the break but the hosts scored from their first attack of the half and, although the visitors’ tackling improved, it wasn’t enough.

Lewis Lord grabbed a consolation try when dummying and jinking through, man-of-the-match Ash Robson converting.

A late try saw Heworth U15s lose 16-10 to Queensbury.

Ryan Martin and Cameron Simpson displayed excellent handling as Heworth led 6-4 at half-time thanks to a try by Tom Leonard, pictured, plus Jonny Rawsthorne’s goal. A long run by Ollie James set up Leonard’s second but a breakaway try gave Queensbury the spoils.

Rawsthorne, Lewis Hilstrip, Joe Raddings, newcomer Luke Thompson, top tackler Andy Spencer, and men-of-the-match Leonard and Simpson stood out.

Battling New Earswick U14s lost to a late drop goal at Doncaster Toll Bar in a physical encounter that ended 23-22.

All Blacks ran out of numbers and energy in the last ten minutes, having lost threequarters Sam Gibson and Brad Watson, who had defended well on the left, and prop Jim Douthwaite, who had opened the scoring, before half-time.

New Earswick had looked in control in the first half, with man-of-the-match Chris Scurr making good yards from full-back and Arron Ogden and Flamur Jashari taking accolades for their defence. Tom Wilson dived over from acting-half after good runs from James Wilsher and Gibson, while half-backs Luke Adamson, who kicked three goals, and top tackler Will Ireland combined to send in the impressive Liam Harrison.

Ireland crossed in the second half after regathering his own kick, but Doncaster came back to win it.

Derby delight went Heworth U10s’ way again in a thrilling game against New Earswick U10s.

Five-try Jak Ostergaard was Heworth’s man of the match, while Kian Oliver scored in the corner after a great offload from Harry Griffiths. New boy Frank Strange impressed and Luke Prenty also stood out.

All Blacks showed a big improvement from the last time these teams met.

Lewis Young was top performer, scoring twice, while parents’ player-of-the-match Ryan Kendra and Taylor McDonough also crossed.

The three girls, Ellie Harrison, Brooke Myhill and Ellena Powell, stood out, while the effort of ever-improving Magnus Fielding and a blistering drive by Dan Cannon also caught the eye.
