Updated: A FARMER has called for traffic-calming measures on a North Yorkshire road following a crash in which two people were injured.

The most recent accident at Wistow Common, saw a male rider of a three-wheeled motorcycle and his pillion passenger suffer minor injuries in a collision with a Nissan Micra last Saturday.

The driver of the Micra, from Selby, was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

It is not certain that speed was an issue in this accident and North Yorkshire Police are still investigating the incident. Anyone who witnessed the crash should call police on 0845 6060247.

Billy Foster, a retired farmer who lives in Scalm Lane, near the common, said motorists had always driven too quickly on the road, which features a pair of tight bends.

He said: “We get a lot of accidents round here, and the air ambulance were here about 18 months ago after a motorcycle crash. I’ve been here 40 years and it’s always been fairly bad.

“The police know about a lot of them, but sometimes people skid in the field, turn round, then drive off.”

Mr Foster said the road layout does not encourage speedy driving, but accidents happen all the same: “There haven’t been many particularly serious injuries because people aren’t going all that fast, as the bends are quite tight. They’ll usually be going about 20mph, but some try faster and end up in fields or hedges.

He said: “Over the years, I’ve even had two police cars come straight down my drive and they should know the road.

“It’s a serious problem. It’s a wonder nobody’s been killed. I wish somebody would do something about the road, because it is a nasty corner and in the winter it’s particularly bad because it’s a shiny surface.”
