POLICE in East Yorkshire have been stopping vehicles on roads used by metal thieves in a bid to tackle the crime.

As part of a national day of action, the regional roads policing team, working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, yesterday checked the road worthiness and cargo of vehicles stopped on target roads used by those often linked with moving stolen metal.

Officers also visited scrap metal dealers across the district.

Metal theft-related offences have increased significantly across the UK, fuelled by rising prices for metal.

In East Yorkshire, thieves have stolen lead from houses, churches and businesses, causing several thousand pounds-worth of damage.

Chief Inspector Mark Johansson, who leads the fight against metal theft in East Yorkshire, said: “Across the East Riding we have a number of close-knit communities, and I would ask anyone who notices anything suspicious in their town or village to contact the police.”

Anyone with information about metal theft offences can phone Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
