THE other day I had to go into York. My journey was made even more tedious than usual by the traffic in Gillygate.

This road is always crowded and conditions were made much worse by the fact that a truck and two vans were parked halfway on the pavement about midway between Lord Mayor’s Walk and Bootham.

On returning home I rang the police to complain, but was told this was a matter for the council as traffic wardens were their responsibility. I therefore rang the council and was told I was being put through to the appropriate department. At this point I came to a stop. The telephone at the other end rang and rang so after several minutes I gave up.

Have our beloved council now got a new method of dealing with complaints by putting them through to a telephone which is in a locked, sound-proof cupboard?
