FOLLOWING your article in The Press of October 24 regarding fuel poverty and comments made recently by Lord Sugar on BBC Radio 2, I wish to let readers know about the Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter Campaign 2011.

Lord Sugar mentioned that he was in receipt of the non means-tested winter fuel payment (paid to all individuals over the age of 60 during November and December) and that there was no mechanism to return this payment, even though he did not need it.

Here at the Community Foundation we are about to launch the Surviving Winter campaign which will enable people to redirect their winter fuel payment to alleviate fuel poverty.

This national campaign is run by the Community Foundation Network and endorsed by celebrities including Terry Wogan and David Jason. Some 46 local community foundations will each be working to attract donations in their area.

Here at Two Ridings Community Foundation we work in the areas of North and East Yorkshire, York and Hull. Further details can be found at trcf.org.uk We hope to encourage those who can afford it to forgo some or all of their winter fuel payment to help those most in need. General donations can also be made.
