A mum who gave birth to a 11lb 12oz bouncing baby girl revealed she had to wrap her newborn in a towel until the clothes shop opened because her new togs did not fit.

Mum-of-two Rebecca Johnson, 24, who craved Fab ice lollies during her pregnancy, delivered healthy Millie Sofia in 90 minutes.

The baby’s size was a shock not only to the parents, who had no warning, but also to the midwife, who said it was the biggest baby she had ever delivered in her 22 years’ experience.

In fact, Millie, who measured 1ft 9ins when she was born, was so big that her mother lost three stone after the birth.

Rebecca told how her plumber husband Martyn, 27, had to rush to Next as soon as its doors opened the next morning and buy clothes usually worn by babies aged three to six months so their newborn had something to wear.

Three-week-old Millie, who now weighs 12lb 2oz, is bigger than her three-month-old cousin Evie, much to the amusement of her parents, from Hambleton, near Selby.

Relieved Rebecca, whose first daughter, Hollie, three, weighed an impressive 9lb 5oz when she was born, said: “I was feeling pretty tired by the end of my pregnancy – Millie was ten days overdue so in fact during the last week I didn’t move off the sofa because she was so heavy.

“We had no idea she would be this big, the doctors didn't warn us so it was such a surprise.

“The scales reached 11lb 12oz and the midwife said ‘Well, that's the biggest baby I’ve ever delivered in 22 years’.

“I think my husband was very impressed. All those times I was moaning about my bad back – now he can sympathise, the moaning was justified.

“None of the lovely clothes we had bought for Millie fit, she was just too big for them. Because it was late at night, none of the shops were open so we had to wrap her up in a towel until the morning when Martyn rushed out to Next to buy her clothes that fit.

“It’s a shame Millie won't get to wear all the lovely little newborn clothes we had ready but I've got lots of friends with babies so the newborn clothes won’t go to waste.”

Rebecca, a recruitment consultant who is only 5ft 4ins tall, said: “I’ve no idea why Millie was so big. My aunts all had larger babies.

“Perhaps it was all the Fab ice lollies I ate when I was pregnant – they were more refreshing than anything else, but I couldn’t get enough of them.”

With two healthy daughters, Rebecca is not planning on adding to her brood. She said: “I've heard they get bigger each time you have a baby – I was so shocked at the size of Millie, I don’t want another.”
