DOUBLE-WINNING bowlers at Clarence Working Men’s Club have dedicated their success to the memory of former captain Paul Cain.
The Clarence Street-based club won the York Club Institute and Union Bowls League and Knockout Cup last season and collected the trophies in honour of Cain, who died a year ago aged 59 after battling throat cancer, pneumonia and brittle bone disease.
The club are believed to be one of only two teams to record a York CIU league and cup double, with Cain leading them to the feat about five years ago.
Holgate pushed Clarence all the way in a title race that was eventually decided by two points, while they beat South Bank in the final of the knockout.
Paul’s brother, Steve, who captained the side last year, said: “It was Dennis Horsley who said he would like to dedicate the achievement to Paul, who was a great friend of his. Everyone thought it was a great idea.”
