Both York Indoor Bowls Club ‘A’ and New Earswick IBC had impressive opening victories in their Yorkshire Over-55s League campaigns.

York toppled last season’s second division champions Redcar, while New Earswick prevailed over Redcar.

In division one, York had a five-shot deficit to make up after the away leg which saw Malcolm Thompson’s rink come from 8-5 down after seven ends to win 24-17.

Graham Instone’s team looked to be on course as they led 13-9 after 13 ends but lost 26-14.

At home, Graham Brooke’s team were in fine form only losing five ends as they comfortably triumphed 45-10.

The rink led by Phil Parsons had a tougher game which saw them 16-10 down with three ends to play. However, a four, a two and then another four on the last end gave them a 20-16 success to seal a 103-69 aggregate victory and 14 points.

New Earswick held a 40-37 advantage after ten ends of their second division duel and then pulled away to finish 87-65 victors over Leeds to collect 16 points.

At home, Ralph Tiplady’s team were 7-2 behind after three ends, then rallied to level at 19-19 with six ends to play.

Two threes gave the home side an unassailable lead before they completed a 26-21 win.

Surprisingly Barry Johnson’s rink lost.

After turning the game round with a seven and, soon after, a five to lead 21-14 with four ends to play, they lost all four to perish 25-21.

Away, Terry Shepherdson’s side were 5-4 down after seven ends. They stepped up a gear, only losing two more to ease home 26-7 victors.

Barry Harrison’s rink picked up six shots between the tenth and 13th ends to go from 7-6 down to lead 12-7 in a tight game where they kept the advantage to win 14-12.
