IN reply to Tony Kelly’s column (The Press, October 22), York Tug of War Club went to the Yorkshire Championship at the Countryside-live Event and competed in the annual contest.

York did extremely well and won the men’s 680K competition. York also won the 600k 4x4 and 660K 4x4, 4 men and 4 women. York also gained runners up in the men’s 640k and women’s 8. This was a significant achievement and proved that in Yorkshire, we are the top tug-of-war team.

We train twice a week, every week, and during the season, April to October, we pull every weekend. We travel the country to different contest as we are part of the Federation of Tug of War. At the nationals we managed a silver in the 660k 4x4 and went to Belgium and competed in the world 4x4 championship.

York has not had a successful tug-of-war team for ten years. We are out there doing it and we want the support of the city. We are not eight blokes or women fancying our chances at a village fete after a few beers – we are as dedicated as any of tug-of-war team in this country.
